How You Sang when It All Began

What did You feel, loving Heavenly Father, as You spoke—as You sang—the stars and galaxies into full swing?

You did not scatter a few pebbles into the darkness and call it good. You drew the substance of creation from mysteries beyond our knowing. Then You exhaled, and there arose a sonorous symphony—a holy cacophony of love and light.

With the touch of a sculptor, You shaped depth and form. You wove all things together while preserving the wonder of every minute detail. Nothing was overlooked. Nothing was carelessly placed. Creation bore the imprint of Your love upon its entirety.

Time was nothing.

All creation rested beneath one glorious tenuto stretched across the immensity. No one stirred. Nothing quivered within the holy expectation of what would come next.

From which direction would it come?

From above, with expanse and heavens? Or from below, with earth and sea—things separating and then joining, mingling and refreshing?

From when did it come, and when shall it end—if ever?

Great God, You hovered over it all. You moved between form and air, diving deep and soaring high. Then, with the smallest movement of Your finger, galaxies burst into being for Your pleasure and renown.

And then the spark of an idea sent a quiver through all the heavens.

Your flight stopped. The undulations of creation became still as all things watched the God of creation stoop down, cup the soil in His hands, and breathe one long, loving breath into it.

And You formed me.

All love and destiny were carried within that long exhale, mingling with the synapses and sinews of the flesh taking form.

Who am I that You should think of me?

I am Your creation, and You love me. You have always loved me, and into eternity Your love will shine upon me.

I bear Your image.
I live by Your breath.

My heart belongs to You, and You have given Yourself to me. You have bound me to Yourself in love. I am held within Your will, and You are forever my God.

And so I bring You an offering of praise—the incense of a heart longing for connection and finding You in the cool of the evening.

Here is fellowship between the Creator and the created.

There are no walls and no hindrances. You know me, and I am learning to know You.

This is my offering to You tonight, even as I sense the chasm that has widened across the ages. Still, You reach toward me. You are ever present, calling me and gently wooing me, longing for fellowship once again.

I say yes, dear Father.

You call, and I hear You.

I say yes tonight as the sleep of my body opens a door within my spirit. Take me into Your arms and guide me. Quiet every disturbance within me. Open my sleep-filled mind so that I may know You more deeply and begin to grasp the simple intricacies of Your heart.

You are my Creator and Father, my merciful Savior and ever-present Lord.

Lord of lords and King of kings.

Amen.
