Dear Lord,
I am so very tired today. My body feels the cost of waking early and facing so many emotionally charged things. Not least among them is my own propensity to sin—and my tendency to treat it as though it were no great matter because everyone feels and contemplates such things.
I feel the weight of the glaring inconsistencies in my life. On the one hand, I am utterly captivated by this call to rediscover repentance in the life of a believer—in my own life. Yet even as I think, speak, and write about repentance, I find myself lukewarm.
So I ask You again: never stop meeting me here, at the crossroads of my humanity and the spirit You have awakened within me. Open my eyes again to my desperate need for a Savior.
Come and save me.
Save me from the lukewarm place in which I find myself, even while I remain occupied with many things—important things, perhaps even good things. Save me from mistaking activity for faithfulness, thought for obedience, and spiritual language for spiritual life.
Do not allow my failures to drive me away from You. Let them drive me toward You. I do not want merely to write about returning. I want to return. I do not want merely to understand repentance. I want to repent.
Meet me here once again, Lord. Receive this tired, divided, inconsistent heart. Cleanse it, steady it, and turn it toward You.
Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
Amen.
