A Prayer in the Middle

Precious Lord,

Oh, for a heart that seeks You—not merely for what You might give, but because You are worthy of being sought.

Teach me to come before You without demanding instant relief. My testimony is not simply that I had a problem, prayed, and You delivered me. That is a wonderful testimony, but it is not the whole testimony. The deeper testimony is that while the trial remained, I remained with You.

Although every torment and sorrow will one day be laid down, even now I will rejoice in the Lord. I will be glad in God my Savior.

Though I lose my job—yes, Lord.
Though cancer enters the room—yes, Lord.
Though my marriage trembles or my finances collapse—still, yes, Lord.

This does not mean that I call suffering good or pretend that it does not hurt. It means that I will not allow my circumstances to define Your goodness. Enlarge my vision of Christ until I understand that the transformation is not always taking place around me. It is taking place within me.

Build patience in the very place where my impatience cries out. Teach me to wait without believing that I have been forgotten. I will seek You. I will lean into my faith and trust Your heart when I cannot see Your hand.

Let my prayer rise like incense before You. May You be pleased with the offering of a heart that remains before You—still seeking and still saying yes.

And, Lord, as I wait before You, I bring those who are in the middle of hard and painful circumstances. I pray for those whose unwise decisions have brought them into trouble, and for those who simply found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. Shame has diminished them. Self-doubt has entered their hearts, and they can no longer see themselves clearly.

I pray for those who have lost much and for those who can feel something precious slipping away. I pray for those who are caught in the middle, where there is no easy way forward and no safe way back.

Holy Spirit, make a way for those for whom I pray.

Come to those who long to escape pornography but cannot find their way out. Break through the secrecy and shame. Come near to those who are considering harming themselves or someone else. Interrupt the darkness, precious Lord. Place a steady hand upon the wavering heart and bring someone trustworthy alongside them.

Open the eyes of those whose world has crumbled and who believe that there is no way out. Reveal the path they cannot yet see. Let Your light enter the place where despair has spoken its final word and declare that the story is not over.

And while we wait for circumstances to change, change us. While we wait for the door to open, keep our hearts open to You. Let this be our testimony: the darkness did not silence our praise, the waiting did not destroy our faith, and the trial did not remove You from the center of our lives.

The miracle is not only that You will bring us out. The miracle is that You meet us here.

Here in the middle, we say yes.

Amen.
